DC native, Rajah Caruth became the 3rd Black driver to win in a NASCAR National Series race this past Friday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He became the first Black driver to win a Truck Series race since Bubba Wallace won in 2017. Caruth made headlines prior to the race in the no.71 Spire Motorsports, Hendrickcars.com truck, scoring his first ever career pole with a margin of 0.001 seconds over Christian Eckes.
The 200 mile race began at 9:00pm eastern time. Skies were clear with wind gusts up to 35mph. The no.38 truck of Layne Riggs, started in the rear due to an unapproved adjustment to the spoiler of the truck. Caution lights flashed on lap 3 as Bailey Currey spun after contact with the no.77 of Chase Purdy in turn 2. Ty Majeski would go on to win the first stage.
After finishing the first stage in 6th place, Christopher Bell restarted the second stage in the rear for equipment interference on pit road. Majeski would win stage 2, looking like the truck to beat to that point.
The caution flag would wave again on lap 68, when Dean Thompson made contact with the outside wall in turn 4. After sweeping the first two stages, Majeski sped on pit road, resulting in a speeding penalty ultimately ending his pursuit towards the race win. Nick Sanchez and Layne Riggs also faced speeding penalties during pit cycles. Tanner Gray received a commitment line violation with 20 laps to go aswell. After leading 38 laps, Caruth would finish first over Tyler Ankrum, scoring his first career victory.
